In today’s blog, we are sharing a past project where we revitalized a couple’s outdoor and indoor spaces, updating their home in San Gabriel, California with design details that were meant for them. First, let’s take a closer look at their outdoor space.
When we first saw it, the backyard was just a grassy expanse with a large, unused garden area. The clients found it somewhat depressing, and knew it lacked the functionality they desired. They also had their wedding date set for the upcoming future, and wanted to be able to spruce up their space in advance. With their impending special day and many guests to entertain, they called on Avec Interiors to turn this neglected area into a vibrant outdoor space.
Before we could create the design, we needed to establish some goals. Our primary goal was to create a functional and inviting patio area complete with all the necessary amenities. The design needed to balance comfort and aesthetic appeal while providing a versatile space for gatherings. Beyond that, the client knew they wanted to incorporate a stone wall, which would mimic others that are found throughout the historic neighborhood they lived in.
From consultation to implementation, we orchestrated every detail with care and precision. The big-picture design focused on dividing the yard into distinct areas for hardscape and garden. In the garden section, we incorporated raised beds, a compost area, and preserved the existing trees. Our client’s stone wall was incorporated, and it served as the perfect divider between the patio and garden. We softened the overall look by curving the wall around a tree, which created a harmonious blend with nature.
Seeing the final transformation was really exciting. The new patio featured comfortable seating, a barbecue with a refrigerator, and countertop space to place or prep food. By using traditional furniture, we were able to complement the historical elements for a cohesive look. This space now serves as the perfect spot for outdoor gatherings and relaxation–whether for the clients’ own family or a host of guests.
Our team also helped the couple renovate their kitchen, which they knew would be another important gathering space. Let’s talk about how that process went!
The kitchen was initially claustrophobic and outdated, with an awkward layout and insufficient space. The clients, who are avid cooks, needed a kitchen that would support all their culinary endeavors and provide a welcoming environment for their guests.
Our main objective was to create a spacious and functional kitchen that was tailored to our clients’ needs and style preferences. The new design aimed to maximize space, improve workflow, and incorporate modern amenities while maintaining a traditional style.
Starting with the consultation, we began to plan the transformation, soliciting our clients’ feedback on the design as we went. An adjacent laundry room and water heater were relocated to open up space. The design included incorporating a large island, partially opening the kitchen to the dining area, and creating specific zones for various tasks. We integrated a prep area with a special sink and juicer, a coffee station for their espresso machine, and a 36-inch range. The cabinetry combined bright whites with oak lower cabinets (which, when we did this project several years ago, was a style ahead of its time!), which brightened the room while creating visual intrigue from the wood.
The clients’ new kitchen is a chef’s dream. The big island offers ample workspace and storage, while the designated prep and coffee areas enhance convenience. The layout promotes a better workflow, and the bright, airy design makes the kitchen a welcoming hub. The transformation has significantly improved both functionality and aesthetics, making the kitchen a central, enjoyable space for cooking and socializing.
